WASTEWATER
Microflocs
- Tiny masses of non-settleable microorganisms and particles that come together to form progressively larger, heavier particles.
- (COA01) Coagulation – Part 1: The Chemistry of Coagulation (1248)
- Very small (usually visible to the human eye) masses of non-settleable microorganisms and particles. These are beginning stages of flocs that come together to form progressively larger, heavier particles.

Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids (MLSS) The concentration of suspended solids (both organic and inorganic) in the mixed liquor of an aeration tank. MLSS is used as a measure of the concentration of microorganisms present.

nBOD Nitrogenous BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) - The stage of decomposition that occurs in biological treatment processes when specialized aerobic bacteria (nitrifiers), use DO to change ammonia to nitrate; sometimes referred to as second-stage BOD.

Nitrification
- An aerobic process in which specialized bacteria (such as Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter) change the ammonia and organic nitrogen in wastewater into oxidized nitrogen (usually nitrate).
- (BNR01) Nitrification and Denitrification – An Introduction to Nitrogen Removal (1485)
- (BNR02) Nitrification Factors – Suspended Growth Treatment Systems (1821)
- Biological oxidation of ammonium to nitrite and nitrate, or a biologically induced increase in the oxidation state of nitrogen.
